Ok so today I not only picked some Florida oranges but I learned all about the man who started Tropicana orange juice. Exciting! Darrell and I drove over to Lin’s orange groves to pick some oranges for some Chinese men who were living on a boat docked here in Florida. Lin is a cute old man with an infectious laugh. He loves the Lord and is so excited when he gets the opportunity to serve. Now I have never actually gone orange picking. I have picked blueberries, blackberries, and peaches, but never oranges. It’s not easy! Those suckers hold onto that tree tight. Darrell though he’s a stud he jumped up on that ladder and picked away. My job was just to run around and pick up the ones he dropped down. I had to watch out for the orange grenades flying towards my head. They were some big oranges. I picked up one that was the perfect softball size, and it brought back wonderful memories. Before throwing it into the bucket, I cocked my arm back and motioned with it as though I was back on the dirt softball field throwing out a player at third base. Man I miss it. Anywho, after picking about four good sized buckets we were done. We divvied up 23 bags with 8 oranges in each for the 23 Chinese men Darrell would visit with later. We bid our goodbyes to Lin and told him we would be back next Saturday to pick some more for the church. Next time I think I will take my camera. It’s true by the way that Florida has the best, juiciest oranges. The orange groves here are too like Redlands are beginning to be chopped down for the next house or office space. It’s such a shame.
